Lost Filling

Cavities are a common dental problem often addressed by a dental filling. If taken care of properly, they last long. But certain events may make your fillings fall out.

From grinding or clenching your teeth too much to the bacteria leaking into the margins – your dental fillings may become loose and fall out in any situation and lead to severe decay. If left untreated, a fallen-out filling may worsen the condition of your teeth. Sometimes, fillings also fall out because of accidents, injury, or chewing hard foods. Another reason that makes your dental fillings fall out is the decay in your teeth.

What to Do When Fillings Fall Out?

We will examine your case and also carry out an X-ray of your teeth to find out the best treatment option.
  • New Filling
Upon finding out that your teeth can be restored, we will put another filling in the cavity. We will choose the filling from the options like silver, composite, or glass ionomer. For your front teeth, we will mostly recommend a composite filling. A composite filling is made using a dental-grade composite material and resembles your natural teeth. If you maintain proper dental care, these fillings may last 10-15 years.
  • Root Canal
If the cavity is deep and the exposure to the nerve of your teeth is severe, we may perform procedures such as root canal and dental crown to restore the function of your teeth. A root canal treatment will help remove the infection or decay in your teeth, whereas dental crowns will act as a restorative procedure.
  • Tooth Extraction
Sometimes, a cavity damages your teeth beyond any repair or restoration. Thus, the only option left with us is to extract them. We will design a treatment plan and extract the damaged teeth to further replace them with options such as dental implants or removable bridges.

How to Protect Dental Fillings?

It is recommended to take proper care of your dental fillings by following a dental care routine. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and use a mouth rinse to remove the accumulation of plaque and bacteria. Use fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth. Do not consume hard foods, especially from the site of the dental filling. Visit us regularly for dental check-ups and examinations. The check-ups and examinations must be carried out once every six months as a part of preventive dental care.
