Maintenance

Gum disease can be prevented from becoming more severe in almost all instances if proper plaque control is followed. An ethical approach to controlling plaque includes regular professional dental cleaning at least twice every year and regular flossing and brushing.

  • Brushing helps remove plaque that has accumulated on the surface of teeth which can be accessed. Make sure to brush your teeth twice each day.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush as well as fluoride toothpaste.
  • The old, worn-out toothbrushes don't do a great job cleaning your teeth. So replace your toothbrush every three months or earlier when bristles start to fray.
  • Flossing is a great way to remove foods particles and plaque in the space between your teeth and beneath the gum line. So make sure you floss every day. Regularly flossing removes plaque out of areas that your toothbrush isn't able to reach.
  • Consider interdental cleaning products and picks or smaller brushes that can be inserted between your teeth. Consult your dentist about how to use them to ensure you aren't damaging your gums.
  • Rinse your mouth using the antibacterial mouthwash. It will prevent gingivitis, reduce the number of bacteria that cause gum disease, and fight bad odors and plaque. Consult your dentist about which mouthwash is best for you.

Lifestyle Changes to Control Gum Disease

Lifestyle and health changes can reduce the chance of gum disease. They can also reduce the severity of it and also slow down the rate at which it progresses. These comprise:

  • Stop smoking. It is not only harmful to your lungs and heart but can also harm your gums and teeth. People who smoke are seven times more likely to suffer from gum disease than non-smokers. Smoking also reduces the chance of successful treatment.
  • Lower anxiety. Stress may make it hard for the body's immunity system to defend against infections.
  • Maintain a healthy food plan. Bacteria in your mouth feed off sugars and starches that you eat and fuel the release of acid that attacks the enamel of your teeth. Take proper precautions to keep your gums and teeth in good health. Proper nutrition helps your immune system fight infection, especially the one that affects your gums. Foods rich in antioxidants, foods that contain Vitamin E (vegetable oils, nuts, and green leafy veggies), as well as Vitamin C (citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes), will help your body heal damaged tissue.
  • Do not clench or grind your teeth. It can put excessive pressure on the supporting tissues, which could increase tissue damage.
